ADULT: Wingspan - 30 - 40mm. A common moth found throughout the British Isles with the main ID features being the black band across the front of the thorax and the dark central dart shape on the plain brownish forewings. The hindwings are grey. CHRYSALIS: Found underground. LARVA: Reddish-brown above and greyish below with a fine pale dark-edged line along the back. Feeds on a variety of garden and wild plants particularly Ribwort Plantain and Chickweed. Overwinters in this stage. BEHAVIOUR: Attracted to light, sugar and scented flowers. HABITAT: Found in most areas such as woodlands, hedgerows and gardens. FLIGHT PERIOD: Double brooded. May to August. STATUS: Common throughout mainland Britain.
